The Hartford Courant has published a letter to the editors that I wrote on behalf of Connecticut’s Apiary Inspector:

State Bee Protector Crucial

State Bee Inspector Crucial - 15 March 2016 - Opinion Page Letters - The Hartford Courant - Stephanie C. Fox

The funding for his position is at risk due to budget politics.

The ecosystem is collapsing, threatening bee health, and our politicians are failing to appreciate his importance.

Mark H. Creighton, Connecticut Apiary Inspector, shakes confectioner's sugar over one of his beehives at the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station in Hamden. The purpose is the help the bees rid themselves of mites, and it works. They eat the sugar off of each other, which removes any mites that have attached themselves to the creatures. Creighton jokingly calls them "ghost bees" when he does this.
